Acne symptoms are clearly apparent and this is the reason why they give ugly look. Generally acne is identified by persistent red spots and blemishes on the skin. It usually affects the face, neck, chest, shoulders back and upper arms. Below are five major symptoms that characterize the presence of acne:

1. Pustule & Papules: A pustule is basically an inflamed acne lesion that occurs as a red bump having white colored top consisting of pus, oil and cell wreckage. Pustules are formed when a high break in follicle wall occurs. As a result white blood cells occupy the area and pus is formed. A pustule often follows the formation of papule. Papule is also inflamed acne that is generated at the place where there is high break in the wall of follicle. It appears in the form of small red bumps that does not carry pus.

2. Blackheads & Whiteheads: Blackheads and whiteheads are the common acne symptoms faced by many people. A blackhead or open comedo is a type of non-inflamed acne. It appears in the form of dark brown to black cap at the surface of the pore. It is caused due to oxidation of oil and dead skin cells accumulated at the pore.

Being covered with a layer of dead cells, a whitehead also known as milia or closed comedo is a non-inflamed white head located at the surface of the pore. It is caused due to blockage of pore by sebum and cellular debris collected and hardened within follicle.

3. Nodule: A nodule is an inflamed acne lesion that occurs in the form of hard and painful lump inside skin. When a deep break in follicle occur then impurities and cellular debris enters the dermis layer of skin. This infects the adjoining follicles and causes the formation of nodules.

4. Cyst: Cyst also known as cystic acne or cystic breakouts are the most serious acne symptoms of inflamed type. It occurs due to deep break in the follicle. As a result bacteria, cellular debris and sebaceous matter enter the dermis and causes infection. A membrane is formed around infected area. Initially cystic breakouts appear under the skin as soft lumps filled with fluid. However, if they get severe they become large, red and painful.

5. Other Acne Symptoms: Common acne symptoms include dark spots, scarring, redness, lesions and bumps, pus formation, itching, irritation and pain.

Based on above symptoms, acne is classified into two types 1) Inflamed Acne 2) Non-inflamed Acne. If proper treatment is performed then one can get rid of acne at any stage. Therefore it is advised to consult a reputed dermatologist and start treatment as soon as any of above acne symptoms is identified.
